Letter to Media Specialists

The Florida Reading Association invites Pre-Kindergarten through Second Grade students to participate in voting for the Florida Children's Book Award. Nominations for books to be considered for the school year are due by December 15. The books nominated must have been copyrighted within the last five years and be currently in print. A nomination form will be enclosed in the packet sent to participating schools.

REGISTRATION

Registration Form

Participating schools should register by submitting the registration form between September 1st and December 17.  Packets of ideas and other materials will be sent to registered schools beginning in November. Additional schools may register for the program after the due date and will be welcome to participate, but will receive packets with "I voted" stickers and book seals on a first come first serve basis until the supply runs out.

Once students have read or heard the nominated books, their votes can be tallied and returned to the Children's Book Award Chairman for your part of the state. Ballots must be received no later than April 15 (see ballots below). Results will be announced on the FRA web site and in the FRA newsletter. The winning book will be honored at the FRA Conference in October.

PARTICIPATION

This program was designed to encourage young children to become enthusiastic about books by soliciting their votes for the Children's Book Award. We encourage students to read all eight of the books, but they should read at least five of them in order to vote for their favorite. Please submit your school's votes by by fax, mail, or electronically between January 1 and April 15 to the co-chair from your area.

Recommend a Book for the Children's Book Award

 In order to recommend a book for the FRA Children’s Book Award, it must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a strong appeal for Pre-K through Grade 2 children.
  • Have been published within the last five years and be currently in print.
  • Be available in English

 Children, educators, media specialists, publishers, and parents or anyone involved in sharing books with young children may nominate books for next year's award by sending their recommendations to either of the co-chairs by December 15.
