The Florida
Reading Association invites Pre-Kindergarten through Second Grade
students to participate in voting for the Florida Children's Book Award.
Nominations for books to be considered for the school year are due by December
15. The books nominated must have been copyrighted within the last five
years and be currently in print. A nomination form will be enclosed in the
packet sent to participating schools.
Participating schools should register by
submitting the registration form between September 1st and December 17.
Packets of ideas and other materials will
be sent to registered schools beginning in
November.
Additional schools may register for the program after the due date and will be
welcome to participate, but will receive packets with "I voted" stickers and
book seals on a first come first serve basis until the supply runs out.
Once
students have read or heard the nominated books, their votes can be tallied
and returned to the Children's Book Award Chairman for your part of the state.
Ballots must be received no later than April 15(see ballots below). Results
will be announced on the FRA web site and in the FRA newsletter. The winning
book will be honored at the FRA Conference in October.
This program was designed
to encourage young children to become enthusiastic about books by soliciting
their votes for the Children's Book Award. We encourage students to read all
eight of the books, but they should read at least five of them in order to
vote for their favorite. Please submit your school's
votes by by fax, mail, or electronically
between January 1 and April 15 to the co-chair from your area.
In
order to recommend a book for the FRA Children’s Book Award, it must meet the
following criteria:
Have a
strong appeal for Pre-K through Grade 2 children.
Have been
published within the last five years and be currently in print.
Be
available in English
Children,
educators, media specialists, publishers, and parents or anyone involved in
sharing books with young children may nominate books for
next year's award
by sending their recommendations to either of the co-chairs by December 15.
