Secondary Reading Teacher of the Year

The Secondary Reading Council of Florida (SRCF), a special interest council of FRA has established this award to honor an exemplary teacher emphasizing reading at the secondary level.

Nominations are solicited from the districts via a letter, and/or through the Secondary Reading Council newsletter. Information and deadlines can be obtained from the awards committee of the SRCF.

The following criteria must be addressed in the documentation:

  1. Person is currently involved in teaching at the secondary level (6-12, middle, junior or senior high).
  2. Membership in SRCF and FRA (documentation required).
  3. Provide evidence of innovative teaching techniques in the teaching of reading. The information should be in the form of a portfolio of not less than two pages.
  4. Provide five (5) letters of recommendation:
    1. One letter of nomination
    2. One letter from supervisor (principal and/or district level personnel).
    3. Two letters from persons who have actually observed the nominees activities.
    4. One letter from a student who has been directly affected by the nominee's work.
  5. Examples of student work in the form of a portfolio, project or other means to demonstrate a special focus on reading.

The winner will receive:

  • $100 to use for future reading materials (personal or professional),
  • a plaque,
  • a lifetime membership in SRCF, and
  • a one year membership in FRA

The award will be made at the Secondary Reading Council meeting at the FRA Annual Conference. A letter will be sent to the recipient's superintendent and a publicity release will be sent to the local media by the Awards Committee.

2000-2001 Secondary Reading Teacher of the Year
